Struggling to choose your perfect wedding cake? We chat to a finalist of the North West Wedding Awards, Jo’s couture cakes, and find out her tips on creating a show-stopper.
Firstly, I would like to mention how truly delighted I am to be a part of the service at Wrenbury Hall. I meet so many newly engaged couples as they excitedly view their potential wedding venue for the first time and naturally, the majority of couples feel totally overwhelmed by the prospect of what lies ahead. However, from the moment they enter this beautiful family home on their special open days or private appointments and are greeted by Pete the toast master or the wedding co-ordinators: Davina, Sam and Neil, the professional team will help them glide towards their big day. Wrenbury’s recommendation of key suppliers is of enormous help to the newly engaged!
So what do I bring to the table? I feel that my professional culinary background as well as my degree in textiles and design are fundamental requirements for my business. The experience I have gained from working in both of those professions really helps me with my designs: implementing the couple’s ideas and advising future trends and of course, developing new recipes.
I invite the couples to my beautiful kitchen in my barn conversion for a cake tasting and design consultation, next to my total control aga where I bake their cakes. Prior to this meeting they will have been emailed a list of flavours whereby they then select the ones they would like to taste. The freshly baked samples are served on a cake stand, complimented by vintage china with a pot of freshly brewed tea. The couples taste the samples on their own, afterwards I sit with them to discuss their design and which flavours they would like to use. Some couples have very clear ideas about their day and what they are looking for, others request a little more direction. I like to consider everything about the day: colours, flowers, themes etc., so that the wedding cake compliments their day beautifully. For example, some brides have details on their dress which I can copy and pipe onto a cake.
I believe cake tasting is very personal hence why I like to offer a range of flavours from traditional to contemporary. All the recipes are my own, made with finest quality ingredients and baked in my fabulous total control Aga. I am fortunate enough to have a studio at home totally dedicated to the preparation of my wedding cakes, using separate equipment to my family kitchen. To me the utmost detail is important as the wedding cake is a huge focal point of the day.
I absolutely love what I do and work very hard to offer a service which can truly reciprocate the high standards that are set by Wrenbury Hall. I consider myself very lucky to be recommended by such a prestigious Cheshire venue and am blessed to be a part of a couple’s special day.
