Let Them Eat Cake

Did you know that 'cutting the cake' is the very first task the bride and groom undertake together as husband and wife? Paula from Creme de le Creme in Nantwich, talks us through all you need to know when it comes to creating the best bake.
Flavour, flowers, stencils, sparkle...the list can be endless when thinking about your wedding cake.
It’s not all about the design of the cakes, they must taste delicious too. Whether you decide to go for a classic Victoria sponge or a zesty chocolate orange, the taste makes it. A lot of my clients say choosing the flavour of the cake is more difficult than designing it itself, which is why I always suggest going for a different flavour for each tier. The beauty of a bespoke cake design is that it’s made exactly to a couples’ tastes and requirements.
Some clients have a firm idea of what type of cake they would like, whilst others don't know where to begin. That's where I come in! Couples are invited to my showroom to view the cakes on display and browse photo albums of designs I have previously created. Then, whilst they enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake or two, I begin to sketch some designs.
It’s important to have a source of inspiration which can help with the design process. Scrap books, Pinterest boards, fabrics, venue décor and hobbies are all great starting points that can spark an idea. It’s also just as important to specify the details you don’t want on your cake to avoid any mishaps!
All the flowers and foliage on my cakes are exquisitely crafted out of sugar, as are the Bride and Groom toppers. I copy the couples’ exact wedding attire to create “mini me’s” on top of each cake.
The million-dollar question I'm always asked is: ‘How far in advance should I order my cake?’. This is always a difficult one to answer. The bridal magazines specify 6 months prior to the big day, but this can leave you open to disappointment. Many cake designers (myself included) are sole proprietors and therefore can only accept a certain number of bookings in a week.
