A Picture Paints a Thousand Words

You may have noticed that we love a painting (or two!) here at Wrenbury Hall, but did you know that we commissioned Cheshire based artist, Lucy Geldenhuys to create some for us? Lucy’s paintings adorn walls all over the globe and we’ve been lucky enough to sit down with her and find out all about where she takes her inspiration from.

Have you always known you were an artist?

“As a child I was always imaginative and liked creating objects and shapes, something I still do and love just as much now as I did then. I love nothing more than having a blank canvas and seeing where I go with it.”

Have you had any kind of formal training?

“I haven’t no. In fact, I actually trained as a Cordon Bleu chef and worked in Provence. After I returned to the UK, I worked in the restaurant trade for 10 years before turning to painting when I moved to South Africa. I lived in South Africa for around four years before returning to the UK, where I began undertaking commissions.”

What gives you inspiration?

“I love looking at colours in the surrounding landscapes and discovering how the light plays with different colours. Structure is also hugely important to me, but at the same time I like to play around with the freedom a paintbrush gives.”

How did you get your inspiration for the Wrenbury Hall paintings?

“I love the history of Wrenbury Hall. I like to pick-up a feeling in a room before I begin painting anything and the rooms at Wrenbury Hall have a lovely atmosphere.
The Champagne Bar has some beautiful art deco tiles in the fireplace so the idea of the ‘diving beauties’ came from this, as well as the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s.
For the Bridal Suite I went very much with the idea of romance and a softer pallet to compliment the lovely feel of the room.

Are you currently working on an exciting pieces?

“Yes! A very large canvas for a modern contemporary home… the bigger the better.

I also recently finished a collection of paintings that are hanging in Devonshire Bakery’s coffee shop on the High Street in Frodsham, Cheshire. The collection is inspired by aspects from the world of cookery and dining and a few of the canvases actually used to hang in my husband’s restaurant, bar and events venue in London.

I’ve also added to my repertoire with ‘have your cake painted!’. It’s a bit of fun really and something I believe is totally unique. The premise is that you can have your special occasion cake, such as a wedding cake, painted with an appropriate caption and date, for instance the names of the newlyweds and the day they tied the knot.”
